The Polo Loft will be closed for Christmas on 25 December 2011, New Year’s Eve on 30 December 2011 from 3pm onwards and New Year’s Day on 1 January 2012. It will resume operations on 3 January 2012.

Media Coverage on the proposed N-S Expressway Project
As members will have gathered from media reports over the past couple of days, the State intends to acquire various parcels of land along Thomson Road as part of the construction of the proposed North-South expressway.
Yesterday, the Club was officially notified by the Singapore Land Authority that some 300m2 of Club land along Thomson Road (at the NE corner of our polo grounds) will need to be acquired by November 2013.
The Club has requested urgent discussions with the Land Transport Authority and the membership will be kept informed once more information becomes available.

Rugby World Cup Final Telecast at the Club
Please note that the Mountbatten Room will be closed for a private function in conjunction with the final of the Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Polo Tournament 2011 on Sunday 23 October. However, the telecast of the Rugby World Cup Final – New Zealand versus France can still be viewed by members at the Club Bar.

Rugby World Cup
Please note that the Mountbatten Room will only be open to VIP ticket-holders for the final of the 2011 Shanghai Tang Women’s International Polo Tournament on Sunday 9 October from 2:30pm onwards. Therefore, this room will be unavailable for viewing the New Zealand v. Argentina Rugby World Cup game on this day unless you are VIP ticket-holder. The VIP ticket price of $165nett does include free-flow champagne and canapés and the tournament after-party & BBQ (all-you-can-eat), so rugby enthusiasts can not only enjoy the game, but also the excitement and glamour of international women’s polo (featuring eight of the top professional players from around the world) and the post-tournament festivities!
To all the Polo Players and other Club Members who helped out with the treading in after polo on Sunday evening, I would like to express a sincere vote of thanks for your combined efforts.
The Committee is presently engaged with the Ministry of Manpower to achieve the earliest possible resolution of this unfortunate situation that has seen our entire grounds and maintenance crew unable to carry out their normal functions.
The concerted effort we collectively made last night to systematically fill in the divots on the polo field paid off and the field was in pretty good shape this morning – the gods were kind as well - fairly heavy rainfall overnight helped smooth out the field even further.
It just goes to show that when most of us are willing to pull together, we can achieve wonders. As one of those of sufficient vintage still at the Club, I can recall with a certain sense of nostalgia and even pride the good old days – the late 1960’s and 70’s – when such a ‘can do’ spirit prevailed within the Club; when polo players as well other members could always be counted on to roll up their sleeves and selflessly get on with whatever job had to be done for the benefit of the Club. A real community of polo players, spectators and friends which is as it should be in the world of polo. We can be proud that the Club saw some of this spirit prevail once again this past Sunday.
I think the same sense of solidarity was also in clear evidence in our Riding Section where kids, teens and especially parents all chipped in, making every possible effort to ensure the weekend’s event was a great success despite not having the grounds and maintenance crew at hand to assist as usual.
Once more, a very big thank you indeed. Three cheers for the Singapore Polo Club!!
Honorary Secretary,
For the Committee.
Closure of Polo Loft
The Polo Loft will be closed for Hari Raya Puasa celebration on Tuesday 30 August 2011.
Closure of Tennis Court #1
Please be informed that Tennis Court #1 will be closed for further repair works from 29 August to 11 September 2011.
Presidential Election
Saturday 27th August will mark the Presidential Election for all Singaporean. However, please be informed that all riding lessons will still be conducted as per usual, although this date has been deemed a Public Holiday.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Riding Department if you have any queries or require further clarification.
As many of you may be aware, the recent addition of the Integrated Resorts: Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa has had a significant impact on the Gaming operations at all private clubs in Singapore, including ourselves. We have experienced a significant decline in gaming revenue; with a 37% decrease to date (versus 2010) and forecasted 40% reduction in net profit for the current financial year (versus 2010). All clubs have given due consideration to various options for alternative revenue to offset this sharp decline, with most increasing their monthly subscriptions.
At a meeting of our Committee on 13 August, it was also decided to increase the monthly subscription at the Club effective 1 September 2011:
| Single |
+S$10 |
from S$105 to S$115 +GST |
| Family |
+S$30 |
from S$120 to S$150 +GST |
A comparison of the monthly subscription fees for other private clubs of our caliber reveals that we will still remain lower than most for family subscriptions and we ask for your understanding and support of this increase in fees given the circumstances.
Thank you for your continued support of the Singapore Polo Club!
Honorary Secretary
17 August 2011
The Polo Loft will be closed on National Day, Tuesday 9 August 2011 and will operate as per normal on Wednesday, 10 August 2011.
Swim Diapers
Effective immediately, infants and young children must wear a swim diaper when using the pool – children’s wading pool and/or main pool as "accidents" can and do happen! We have experienced yet another incident of this type recently; forcing the closure of the main pool and inconveniencing many members during a busy weekend period. Such an incident can be avoided and members are asked to be mindful and courteous of the other users of our pool facilities.
Members that do not comply with this request will be asked to remove their child from the pool and we would rather avoid any unnecessary embarrassment or inconvenience. Swim diapers are available at Front Reception (S$5 each) in case of emergency and infants or young children that are not yet toilet trained should not enter either pool without wearing such a diaper. Please ensure that this message is also communicated to your guests, guardian or domestic helper for the convenience of all users.

The following days/times govern - until further notice - the use of the large NEP arena. Club members using the arena are requested to both familiarize themselves with this time table as well as adhere to it.

Tuesday to Saturday |
Half of arena used by EFS (AM/PM) |
Half of arena used SPC (AM/PM) |
Sunday |

During times when this facility is to be shared between the EFS and SPC, the arena will be partitioned with barriers into two halves along the centre of its long side.
While the re-surfacing work within the SPC ‘Top School’ is being carried out during July/August, SPC riding lessons normally conducted there will instead be diverted to the NEP arena (and the conduct of such lessons there will take precedence over polo players wishing to exercise their ponies within the NEP arena). In any case, polo players are requested to use this arena with consideration and all due regard for non-polo playing riders – if there are other riders present, please refrain from galloping your pony all over the arena, as well as executing sharp turns and stops in the immediate vicinity of other riders.

Track: from 15th July to 24th July
Top School: from 18th July to 10th August
Polo ponies have now moved into the new National Equestrian Park and work is underway to construct a new, widened and strengthened bridge crossing (near the stick & ball arena) from the NEP to the Club. This is in order that horses stabled there may move back and forth into the Club safely and efficiently, particularly on polo evenings. Part of this work involves widening the length of track beside the stick & ball arena and top school to allow four horses abreast to use this path.
Re-surfacing of the top school sand arena is due to commence on Monday, 18th July and this work will continue for the remainder of July and into early August. The scope of works is to remove the existing sand, do some grading, construct proper sub-soil drainage and to re-surface the school with a sand–fibre footing (as was recently done at the NEP arena).
While the track beside the top school remains closed, rider wishing to access the jungle trail or paddocks will need to use secondary trail (Brede von Lissberg’s ‘secret path’) that starts beside the farrier’s shed. In anticipation of this, the trail has in fact been widened in places and roots etc. tidied up where possible; there is also railing in place where the escarpment has no trees. Nonetheless, caution needs to be exercised when using this path as there is a steep drop to one side: riders should keep away from the edge as far as possible and must not lead more than one horse when using this trail and be extra careful when using the path in wet weather. If you are an inexperienced rider, tag along with someone who is more experienced.
The Club apologizes for the noise and inconvenience that will inevitably accompany this construction work.

After a review of the local club rates for half- and full-leases and no price increase during the past four years (in spite of an inflationary increase in costs), it has been decided to increase the cost of half- and full-leases by $100 and $200 respectively effective 1 August 2011:
Half Lease from $700 to
Full Lease from $1200 to
We thank you for your understanding of this price change and for your continued support of the Riding Section at the Singapore Polo Club.
Ken McMillan
Riding Convener
Please be informed that the Squash Court will be closed for minor repair work on Thursday 14 July 2011 and Friday 15 July 2011.
Closure of Jungle Track
Please be informed that the riding path around the parameter of the Top School; and leading to the Jungle Track and Paddocks will be closed for widening work from Saturday 16 July 2011 until further notice. Access to the Jungle Track and Paddocks should be made via the entry behind the Farrier Shed.
Polo Restaurant & Bar Updates
Our food & beverage operator, the Polo Restaurant & Bar group, is completing the renovation of The Mountbatten Room; with this outlet to re-open shortly as a Wine & Cigar Lounge. A limited menu will also be served in this sophisticated social and dining environment.
Should the children of any members be interested in part-time work during the summer holiday season, please contact Lamine Guendil of Polo Restaurant & Bar at email: lamineg@singnet.com.sg for more information about part-time work as a waiter or waitress at the Club.
Following discussions with the Polo Restaurant & Bar group, and careful consideration by both the House Sub-committee and Committee, it has been decided to open our food & beverage operation to non-members on Saturdays after 7:30pm effective 1 August for a 3-month trial period. The food & beverage outlets at the Club have especially low utilization after polo on this day of the week and there is concern on the part of the caterer regarding the financial impact of this scenario. Again, this change to our food & beverage operation is for a 3-month trial following which the Committee will re-evaluate the impact of this change of policy, taking into account member feedback during this period.
The Management
8 July 2011
All members are asked not to bring glassware from the Verandah (or any other area) to poolside or use glassware for any reason in/around the pool, including refreshments served in glass bottles. Broken glass was recently found in the children’s swimming pool and we were fortunate that this glass did not cause injury (potentially serious) to any child or parent. The children’s swimming pool was subsequently drained, vacuumed and thoroughly cleaned, but it is the responsibility of all members to ensure the comfort and safety of others in this area. Our food & beverage operators do not use glassware at poolside; with this policy having again been reinforced in the wake of this incident.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Important Notice to All
Children on the Sand Track
Below are some aspects concerning safety in respect of member’s children and the sand track around the polo field.
| 1 | While horses are being exercised - mornings or evenings - and especially during polo children are not allowed anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the polo field up to and including the sand track.
This applies to the outer margin of the polo field as well, between the sand track and the chukka bar / pony lines, unless such children are under the direct supervision of their parents or an infant being carried by a parent. The very real risk of a child being hit inadvertently by a stray ball during polo or being run over by a horse not under control should be plain to all. Less obvious perhaps, though nonetheless dangerous, are instances where children playing or shouting by the sand track have caused horses being exercised to spook or otherwise get out of control.
|
| 2 | No member who is riding a horse around the sand track is allowed to carry a child in front of him/her on the saddle. This applies at all times and with no exceptions. It needs to be understood that a horse, no matter how calm normally, may spook under certain circumstances in which case a nasty accident involving the child riding pillion could well ensue. If, while riding, you wish to carry your child on horseback then please do so in the relative safety of one of the Club’s arenas (making certain beforehand that all arena gates are closed).
|
| 3 | Finally, there have been some recent incidents of the parasitic infection Microsporidiosis at the playing grounds at Turf City. This emanates primarily from the stools and urine of infected animals and lies dormant in the soil. There have also been instances over the past few years of Polo players as well as ponies being stricken with eye infections due to this particular parasite after mud from the polo field or sand track entered the eyes. Microsporidiosis can infect humans in quite a number of ways but in these cases the primary area was infections of the eye. For healthy children and adults, the body fights the parasite quite well and with medication the prognosis is good and eventual recovery occurs in most such cases. |
Polo players may of course wear goggles, especially under wet or muddy field conditions, to protect their eyes. However, parents of young children should also be aware of the risk of contracting Microsporidiosis by allowing their children to sit, run (especially barefoot) or play with the sand on the sand track.
In the event that sand or mud enters the eyes, flush the eyes out with saline or water immediately.
